Microcurrent VS Botox

These days, both women and men are looking for the fountain of youth. Some choose Botox and fillers for a quick fix, while others consider a more natural, non-invasive approach: Microcurrent.

Those who choose the instant results will get “filled” but, similar to fast food, will not be nourished in the long term and the energy runs out quickly. Ultimately, the side effects could cause long term health problems that are worse than just having wrinkles.

What is Botox?

Botox is the injection of a form of botulinium toxin, often injected in the brow furrow, the forehead, around the eyes, and lips, that temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles to reveal smooth, wrinkle-free skin. Within 24-48 hours, the Botox will set in and relax the facial muscles, and it can take a week to see the full effects of the injection. Botox is charged per unit of injection and, depending on how many areas you treat, can be very expensive. Typically, people get injections every 3-4 months to maintain the smooth appearance, and some people report that the injection site is painful or swollen.

What are the side effects?

The body may have a strong immune response to fight the toxin that was injected, and people may find that they will eventually have to go back more often, or seek alternative options since their Botox injections no longer work like they used to, and the procedure is getting too expensive.

As the person ages further, they will realize that the Botox injections do not address the sagging skin falling down with gravity to the jowls. As the muscles are pulled down, more wrinkles will appear and more injections will be needed to temporarily fill the lines that soon form crevices, and then suddenly the cost to inject will become prohibitive for the average person. Not to mention, the amount of toxin that has entered the body is no longer just a small amount. This is where toxicity becomes evident and one’s overall health is compromised.

When injected into the body, Botox can cause an allergic reaction like swelling, rash, itching, wheezing, asthma-like symptoms, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, or flu- like symptoms. Some other potential reactions include drooping eyelids, inflammation of the cornea, itchy eyes, eye irritation, or even increased sensitivity to light. But alas, beauty is pain, right? Wrong. There is another way!

What is Microcurrent?

Microcurrent is like the “whole foods” approach to nutrition, wellness, and long-term health. Working at the cellular level, microcurrent increases ATP (adenosine triphosphate), otherwise known as the energy center in our cells and the fuel for our bodies.  It is a holistic facial treatment that works with your body’s energy to tighten your facial muscles; revealing tighter skin, fewer wrinkles, a smoother appearance, and results that are all you – no filler needed.

Are there side effects?

This is the best part: It is 100% non-invasive and has no side effects!

Microcurrent sends low levels of electrical current into the skin. These currents are identical to the energy in our body and the process is completely painless. It is like going to the gym, but for the muscles in your face (and you don’t break a sweat!). As we age, our facial muscles sag, losing collagen and elastin. Microcurrent re-educates the facial muscles, telling them to tighten, resulting in tighter and smoother skin. However, after the session you can still move your face in all the expressions you want and will have no limited mobility in any of your facial muscles since they are not paralyzed by the treatment.

At Redeeming Thyme, I incorporate non-needle acupuncture with my microcurrent facial services so that the whole body is centered and relieved of stress for the added benefit of better sleep, which contributes to a more youthful, vibrant look and better overall wellbeing. Some of my protocols can even help alleviate headaches and TMJ when combined with the facial protocol.

The benefits of this relaxing service can be seen in a stand-alone treatment, or incorporated in a 6-12 week treatment regime (lasting 60 min per session) to re-train the facial muscles to contract upward and sculpt the jaw from the neck, thus preventing further lines and wrinkles, and creating a smooth skin tone.

A maintenance session every 1- 2 months is recommended depending on the age of the client and if they have reached their desired look. Gravity continues to pull downward as we age, so at least every 2 months a single session is recommended to keep the muscles tight.

The best results are seen with a healthy diet, healthy water intake, reduced chemicals in one’s skincare regime, as well as the proper intake of supplements to feed the skin (which in turn provides wellness and vitality to the whole person).
